2/02+03 ON/OFF Project

Updated: Sep 23, 2018

Technology products, as a tool of human creation, have turned human beings into slaves. Although electronic products bring us a more convenient life style, they also take away the opportunity of face-to-face communication.

My roommate is a so-called web celebrity with lots of followers on instagram. Cell phone have become an integral part of her life. Social media not only brings her fame and a platform for her to share her life to others, but also is a bridge for her to communicate with his fans. Even just a simple lunch, she always takes photos of food and shares them on the instagram. Through this opportunity of the on/off project, I decided to create a new lunch environment for us. The rule is that we can't use our mobile phone during the meal. If who uses the mobile phone first, she will pay the bill. At first, we were so uncomfortable with each other that we couldn't help but want to reach out to the phone. When food came up, she would unconsciously want to take photos with the phone. But eventually, without our phones, we finally had time to chat, gossip and got to know each other better. This is the most happy meal I've had in a while. At this time, I found that we had not had a chance to have a good conversation for a long time. I found that the mobile phone was stealthily invading our life, filling up all the free time while actually delaying us to enjoy the moment. Every time we follow the Google map to our destination, we miss a lot of scenery along the way. Every time we pull out our headphones and immerse ourselves in music, we miss the funny things that happen around us.

Finally I understand that less is more: less technology, more enjoyment of the moment.
