05/03 Reading Take-aways

Updated: Apr 8, 2019

Social media plays an important role in the art world nowadays, especially for young artists, it is the most useful tool for marketing and public relations.

Many young artists, in order to be able to support themselves, must use every means to make themselves famous. To some degrees, social media and their art works are two indistinguishable subjects. There is no essential difference between online and offline activities. Artists have adapted to using social media and the online space for creating and sharing works. The different qualities of different media in the past are no longer present today.

If you are very confident about your artwork, you can showoff your pieces online and many people will notice it. But sometimes, social media is not a good place for an insight feedback, which is usually very limited and of bad quality. When considering that 21th century is the first period in history people have the opportunity to use interactive media and have a chance to get the real feedback from others around the world, but usually the result is, even more disappointing.

Today our social media is used to collect data and information of user’s behavior and human performance and also gives artists critical feedback. Art works in the world of social media has become a subject of computer analyzed numbers -- such as some visitors stand in front of the art work for 3.5 seconds; and there are five audiences passing the artworks for 4 seconds. This quantifiable calculation is exactly what social media is used to do right now. Such quantitative calculations have been carried out in large quantities. What is clear is that all of your actions on social media have fallen into public relations and markets.
